It's that time of year again, when over ten thousand people make the annual pilgrimage to Splashy Fen, one of South Africa’s premier music festivals. Held annually, over the Easter Weekend (April 5 to 9), and hosted on the picturesque Splashy Fen farm, nestled deep in the spectacular mountain setting of the Southern Drakensburg, Splashy has firmly ingrained itself in the hearts of South Africans as the ‘Ultimate Outdoor Experience’.
Splashy is now in it's 23rd year, making it the longest running Music Festival in the country and for good reason… Every year, the seemingly tranquil Underberg farm, transforms into a makeshift tented shaty town reminicent of brazil's favelas; a place full of weird and wonderful peeps, where anything goes, and everyone's there for the same reason, to rock out…
With more than 80 of the finest live acts the South Africa has to offer, this year’s line-up is looking to do itself justice; featuring the likes of Van Coke Kartel, Zebra & Giraffe, The Graeme Watkins Project, Jeremy Loops, Arno Carstens and Albert Frost, Tidal Waves, The Black Hotels, Dan Patlansky, The Rudimentals, Lark (Electro), Madala Kunene, John Ellis, Gary Thomas, Shadowclub, Mr Cat and The Jackal, Gangs of Ballet, The La Els, December Streets, City Bowl Mizers, P.H.Fat and Niskerone, among many others.
2012 is going to showcase more musical genres than ever before, with ska, reggae, folk, anti-folk, acoustic, drum and bass, electronica, jazz, blues and everything in between, ensuring you're always going to have something to move to while not chilling back at camp.
Aside from the music, Splashy Fen offers a total entertainment ‘package’ with river tubing, paintball, zip-lining, a giant 12-metre slide and nearby dam for when you feel like taking a break from the music. Also on offer, is a market and retail area, various food outlets as well as the Sani Pass beer tent, which we're sure you know all about if you've been to Splashy before. Oh, and did we mention the infamous nightly bonfire/circle, where only the most hardcore Splashy Fenners seem to be left standing…
For many it’s become an annual tradition, and if you’ve never been before, then it’s definitely something to be experienced at least once in a lifetime - a South African rite of passage.
Festival creator Peter Ferraz points out that “Nobody can ever say that Splashy Fen is the same old thing year after year. On the contrary, we are always on the look-out for new ways to enhance the festival but never at the risk of losing the special ambience that is unique to Splashy and sets us apart from other festivals.”
With the addition of the brand new Uber Cool Dance Valley bringing a new dimention to the Fen this year and with ourselves in attendence, we think it's time we 'turn it up to 11'.
Tickets are just R500 from Computicket and include camping for the entire festival, or R600 (Limited Amount) for full Dance Valley access and seperate camping area but daily entrance can be purchased. Splashy gates open at 7am on Thursday, April 5th. See you there AXE men…
